This picture below was taken on the 4 th or 5 th September 1877 at Sao Oaolo de Luanda, Africa by J Silveira. It shows the meeting of Serpa Pinto seated on the right with Roberto Ivens behind him and Capello to his left. With the explorer H. M . Stanley (of Dr Livingston fame) seated on the left, who had just completed his exploration of central Africa including his journey down the Congo river from Nyangwe to the Atlantic. Stanley who was then aged 35 is showing Pinto the map he made of central Africa and the Congo river.
The Portuguese explorers were about to start on their own expedition . the two dogs in the foreground belonged to Pinto. Stanley is exhibiting his camp made US flag which has tropical flowers as stars.
